Bases
Bases are hygroscopic. They shrink and loosen, following the fluctuations in the humidity of the air. The layer of the ground and the paints can not follow precisely the movement of the base, because of which with time cracks can appear in it.
For bases of paintings are selected similar canvases – they are evenly stretched, less hygroscopic, and the ground on them is preserved strong for a lot longer. Good quality canvases are weaved from long threads and don't have many knots. Linen and hemp are less hygroscopic and are used for making medium-sized and big-sized paintings, and cotton and jute – for small-sized paintings.
